Maria Filomena "Fil" Ferruggia Obituary

Maria Filomena Ferruggia, affectionately known as "Fil," passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, in Warrenton, Virginia, at the age of 99.

Born on June 12, 1925, in Newark, New Jersey, Fil was the daughter of Alfonse and Vincenza Tobia. She graduated from Barringer High School and answered the call to serve during World War II as a nursing cadet at Newark City Hospital. Following her training, she continued her work there as an intern nurse, dedicating herself to the care of others.

After the war, she married Albert Schwartz and together they raised two sons, Ronald and Albert, in Metuchen, New Jersey. Later in life, she married Salvatore Ferruggia and shared many happy years with him until his passing. Afterward, Fil relocated to Warrenton, Virginia, where she spent her final years.

Fil was predeceased by her parents; her sisters Pauline Spano, Marie Lippincott, and Betty Vella; and her husbands, Albert Schwartz and Salvatore Ferruggia.

She is survived by her loving family: sons Ronald Schwartz and Albert Schwartz; daughter-in-law Carol Miele Schwartz; grandchildren Jacqueline Schwartz Yowell, Andrew Gregory Schwartz, Stephanie Schwartz Hernandez, Nicole Schwartz Morren, and Samantha Schwartz Grecco; and great-grandchildren William Yowell, Nathan Yowell, Brody Hernandez, Valerie Hernandez, and Parker Morren.

A memorial Mass will be held in her honor at St. John the Evangelist Church in Warrenton, Virginia, at 2:00 PM on June 12, 2025, which would have been her 100th birthday A celebration of life will follow at a location to be determined.

Fil will be remembered for her strength, compassion, and unwavering devotion to her family and community.
