Thomas W. Wendling, age 84, passed away on Wednesday, April 23rd in Wheaton, IL. Thomas endured a swift but challenging battle with ALS. He was born on June 1, 1940, and was raised on his family farm in Independence, Iowa. As a young adult, Thomas courageously served for seven years in the Army Reserves during peacetime. He married Judith Cardin on June 29, 1963. Together, they raised four children and relocated to the Chicago suburbs. There, they started a successful computer business, which they ran for over 20 years. Tom had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed camping, biking, hiking, traveling, and socializing. He was known for his hands-on approach, often immersed in home projects that he completed with great skill. He and Judi built their dream home in Dixon, Illinois in the early 2000s, where he devoted himself to caring for her during her struggle with Alzheimer's. Above all, Tom cherished his family and friends, frequently expressing pride in their accomplishments. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was the life of many family gatherings, with cherished memories of annual Thanksgiving campouts at Lake Shabbona. Tom is survived by his three brothers, John (Patricia), Jim (Patricia), and Larry (Lori); daughters, Deborah Kohl (Harry), Crown Point, IN; Diana Fountain, Fox Lake, IL; son, Daniel Wendling, Crown Point, IN; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, with another on the way. He also leaves behind his dear companion, Judy Compton, of Wheaton, IL. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judith E. Wendling, his son, David, his parents, William and Donna (née Conrad) Wendling, and two sisters, Judy Leisinger and Joan Wendling. Thomas will be forever loved and missed by many. His funeral mass will be held on Friday, May 30 at 11:00am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church: 140 N Oakwood Ave, West Chicago, IL 60185. A celebration of life will immediately follow in Saint Francis Hall at St. Mary’s Church.
