The second child born to Marie (Henrioulle) and William Hertz in Chicago, Richard was one of 9 children.
At the age of 5 years, the family moved to Eaton, Ohio where he began his education at Eaton Elementary before moving to Wisconsin at age 7. He attended (Lake) Como State Grade school until the 7th grade. The family then moved to Allens Grove where he graduated 8th grade at Oakwood Elementary. He did his freshman year at Clinton HS and then transferred to DDHS in Delavan the first year it opened.
He married his first wife, Laura Lee Madden from Loves Park, IL at age 22 and moved to California at age 25. She passed away from brain cancer when he was just 36. He spent nearly 30 years working as ASE certified mechanic, 15 years working at a
Shell service station with his partner, and best friend, Jurgen Arndt before selling the business and moving to Lenoir, NC for a few years. He then moved to Edgewater, Florida where he worked at Boston Whaler, building fishing boats until he retired.
He married his second wife, Jane Emmert, in 1992 and they lived there until February of 2022 when Jane passed away from heart failure. He then moved to Janesville, WI where he lived until he passed away from problems associated with congestive heart failure.
Preceding him in death were his parents, 3 brothers: Bill and Alan from Jacksonville FL, and Paul Hertz from Delavan; and one sister, Irene Myher from Murray, KY. He is survived by two brothers and two sisters: Jimmie and Kathy Lorenz from Beloit,
Roseanne Salas from Georgia, and brother Tom from Florida; and an extended family of nieces, nephews, and a very special sister-in--law, Dorothy Hertz from Delavan.
In his long and eventful life, he traveled to all 50 states several times, as well as northern and southern Canada, many cities in Mexico, Peru (South America), and New Zealand.
He was an amateur astronomer who built two large aperture telescopes. He was also an avid photographer and used those skills in his astronomy as well as his many travels. He even found time to author five books: three novels, one book of short stories and a tongue-in--cheek autobiography.
He was also blessed with many truly wonderful friends and wondrous good health for nearly all of his 83 years of life.
He left this life with only one regret and it was that he and Dorothy didn’t get to travel to all the places they wanted to see-...
