James Ricardo Bunch Sr., 64, of Leavenworth, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2025, at KU Medical Center. He was born Oct. 17, 1960, in Lake Worth, Fla., the second of four children to the late James Bunch Jr. and Ladine Helen Singleton.

James grew up in Palm Beach County and graduated from Palm Beach Gardens High School in 1979.

Shortly after graduation, James enlisted in the United States Army. On July 11, 1980, he married his lifelong companion, Cheryl Bunch. Together, they were blessed with three children.

During his military service, James was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and Fort Benning, Georgia. He served honorably as a 95 Charlie (corrections officer) at the United States Disciplinary Barracks. After completing 15 years of active duty, he continued his service as a corrections officer at the United States Federal Penitentiary, where he worked for 22 years until retiring in October 2017. He also served in the Army Reserve, retiring from reserve duty in March 2021.

James made his home in Leavenworth, Kansas, where he was a dedicated member of Independent Baptist Church. He found great joy in worship and especially loved singing in the Male Choir, lifting his voice in praise and fellowship.

James cherished time with his family above all else. He was a devoted husband, father, Papa, uncle, brother, and son. He enjoyed working out at the gym and was known for his strength, kindness, and unwavering integrity. He was deeply respected by all who knew him.

He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife of 44 years, Cheryl Bunch; daughter, Shaunta Miranda (George) of Fayetteville, GA; two sons, James Bunch Jr. (Jesnart) of Leavenworth, KS, and Shawn Bunch (Allison) of San Jose, CA; and a bonus son, Javon Haines of Oregon. He also leaves behind his beloved mother, Ladine Bunch of Riviera Beach, FL; sister, Susan Black (Richard) of Hughesville, MD; two brothers, William Bunch (Valeria) of Los Angeles, CA, and Vincent Bunch of Riviera Beach, FL;nine cherished grandchildren: George Jr., James (JJ), Sebastian, Eva, Nia, Kevi, Riyah, Jalani, and Cari; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

James was preceded in death by his father, James Bunch Jr.

His life was a testament to service, dedication, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
