Maryanne Hawkes Obituary

Maryanne Hawkes, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 27, 2025, at Yale Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut, at the age of 83. She was born on January 19, 1942, in New Haven, Connecticut. Throughout her years, she was known for her kind heart, loving spirit, and adventurous nature. Her talents as a crafter were evident to all who knew her; she was an avid knitter and crocheter whose creations brought warmth and joy to many.

Maryanne was a proud member of the ATHA Nutmeg Rug Hooking Region 1 group, where she shared her passion for traditional rug hooking with fellow enthusiasts. She also delighted in collecting Fenton glass shoes—a hobby that reflected her appreciation for beauty and craftsmanship. Antiquing trips with her beloved husband were among her favorite pastimes, as were long days spent at the beach watching the tide surrounded by family.

Family was at the center of Maryanne’s life. She is survived by her incredibly devoted husband, David Hawkes; her daughters Christine Bertini and Michele Gertsch and son-in-law Edward Gertsch; and her grandchildren Jennifer Damian and husband Francisco Damian, Jaxon Gertsch, and Lauren Gertsch. Maryanne’s legacy continues through her four great-grandchildren: Aidan, Ariana, Nova, and Adrian. She was predeceased by her brother, Paul V. Brockett.

Maryanne’s nurturing presence touched every generation of her family. She was a great wife, an amazing mother, and a caring grandmother whose love will be deeply missed but forever cherished.

The Hawkes family would like to thank the staff of Yale Hospital MICU 9 team for making her last moments comfortable and peaceful. May Maryanne’s memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
