Alexander Shaw Obituary

Alexander "Sandy" Shaw, 82, of Raeford, North Carolina, peacefully transitioned on April 27, 2025, in West End, North Carolina. Born on December 17, 1942, in Sampson County, he was the son of the late Charles and Rebecca Shaw. Sandy lived a life rooted in faith, family, and community. For nearly 40 years, he shared a devoted marriage with his beloved wife, Phyllis Locke Shaw. Together they nurtured a loving family that included their children: Lamar Shaw Allen; Shana Shaw Jackson and her husband, Kenzie. Sandy found joy in his role as a grandfather to Jah'Toria Simms and Philip Simms Jr.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Chardarnay Shaw; his sisters Betsy Shaw Smith, Louise Shaw Melvin, Georgia Shaw, and Virginia Shaw Robinson; and his brother Willie Shaw. Sandy’s memory lives on through his wife Phyllis; their children and grandchildren; his sons Christopher Shaw, Norman Shaw; his brother Joseph Shaw; his father-in-law Arnold Locke and wife Delores; his mother-in-law Cynthia Staton-James and husband Elder Henry James; sisters-in-law Sharon Locke and Cicely Little with her husband David; brothers-in-law Andreus Locke with his wife Stacey and Arnold Locke Jr.; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who held him dear.

After completing his education within the Cumberland County school system, Sandy pursued further certifications as a mechanic and electrician during the early 1970s. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to operate his own transportation service for many years. In addition to running his business, he worked as a skilled mechanic and sign painter. Among family and friends, Sandy’s culinary talents were especially treasured—his meals were often at the heart of joyful gatherings.  Sandy was a member of the Church of God in Christ. He served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher and deacon under the leadership of the late Bishop Howard Sherman. His joyful spirit left an enduring impact on all who crossed his path. Sandy embraced life with enthusiasm and an ever-curious mind. He delighted in working on automobiles, losing himself to the pages of good books, and tending to his garden with care. His passion for learning was infectious; he inspired those around him to appreciate each new day as a gift. One of his favorite sayings captured this sentiment perfectly: “It is a good morning because God has allowed us to see a new day—and you did not read about yourself in the obituary!” Known for never meeting a stranger, Sandy had an extraordinary gift for connecting with people from all walks of life.

We extend a thank you to FirstHealth Hospice for your compassion and care. Your kindness and support are deeply appreciated.
