Guy Brandon John, 67, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, following a 25-year battle with cancer.

A Memorial Service will be held at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, on Monday, May 5, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior. Following the service, a Celebration of Life will be held at Buzzy’s in Welton from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Born on June 23, 1957, to Malvern and Susan (Homan) John in Oxford Junction, Iowa, Guy was raised in his hometown and graduated from Oxford Junction High School in 1975. He carried his small-town pride and work ethic with him throughout his life. In 1981, Guy married Maria “MeMe” Weeks, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and strong family ties.

He is survived by his beloved wife, MeMe, son, Brandon John of DeWitt, and two stepsons: Tom (Sara) Vanderbilt of Indianola and Gus Vanderbilt of DeWitt. He was a proud grandfather to JT (Lexi) Vanderbilt of Clinton and Will Vanderbilt of DeWitt. Guy is also survived by his siblings: Cindy (Lonnie) Ledvina of DeWitt; Corrie (Kevin) Hamers of New Liberty; Carla Bair of Davenport; Mark (Glenda) John of Cedar Rapids; and Bret John of Oxford Junction. He leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews: Maria Ash, Nick John, Chris John, Ty Ledvina, Tara Terhune, Amber Ledvina, Tiffany Murphy, Colton Bair, Kaitlynn, Kylie, and Cameron Hamers, Amanda Earwood, and Derrick Weeks. He was also close with his sisters-in-law Lana Weeks and Ann Weeks, both of Davenport.

Guy was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers-in-law Dan and Rowdy Weeks, and Dennis Bair; and his mother-in-law, Annabelle Weeks.

Throughout his life, Guy was a hardworking man, known for his strong hands and even stronger sense of humor. He worked in road construction, the Iowa Department of Transportation, and framing before spending 25 years at Sears Manufacturing, where he retired. Outside of work, Guy loved the simple joys: cheering on the Green Bay Packers, golfing with friends, boating with his brother-in-law Lonnie, and hitting the road for travel—so long as it was by car. He especially looked forward to Friday nights with friends and his famous “Whiskey Wednesdays” during the summer.

Guy will be remembered for his loyalty, laid-back charm, and his love for family, friends, and good conversation. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
