Max Sawyer Obituary

Francis “Max” Sawyer, 82, of Mattoon, IL, passed away peacefully at home on April 26, 2025, at 10:04 AM, surrounded by his loving children.

Born on May 24, 1942, Max grew up on a farm where the simple joys of life shaped his spirit. It was on that farm where his father, Milo, first taught him the major chords on guitar around the age of 13. From that day forward music played a central role in his life. His musical journey continued with the influence of his older brothers and friends, leading him to a lifelong passion for playing and creating music.

Max eventually became interested in lead guitar and bought his first Les Paul Gibson from a traveling salesman—purchasing an entire lot of instruments for just $50. With tireless practice and collaboration with his brothers, he helped form the Original “Sawyer Brothers Band”. The group played at Salvation Army churches, the Danville VA hospital, and began performing on a Clinton radio station in 1957. Though they played a few gigs at local taverns, Max preferred venues to share his music in more uplifting settings.

In 1968, Max became captivated by the pedal steel guitar. Driven by a dream and a limited budget, Max set out to build his own pedal steel guitar. He would ultimately construct four instruments, refining his craftsmanship with each. The final result—a single-neck, 12-string beauty made of stainless steel. This guitar stood as a symbol of his determination and pride. Its rich tone and unique design, especially the striking bottle-green finish, reflected his high standards and passion for perfection.

Max is survived by his children Robert “Dale” (April), Lannette Marie (Tom), and Richard; his brother Richard Lee (Deb); his sister Karen Sue (Ron) and several grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Milo and Marie; brothers Marion (Christine), Ed (Lorraine), Tom (Brenda), and Ronnie; and sisters Margaret, Marilyn, and Cheryl.

A celebration of Max’s life will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025 at the Neoga Free Methodist Church, 1029 Railroad Street, Neoga, Illinois 62447. Burial will follow at Zion Hill Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Schilling Funeral Home is assisting the family.
