Michael Eugene Smyers, a kind and humble man who found family in friendship, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, at the age of 70.

Born and raised in Vancleave, Mississippi, Michael carried deep pride in his hometown throughout his life. He loved sports, especially Vancleave High School basketball—and often shared memories from those days with a spark in his eye.

Though our friendship began just two years ago, when I picked him up on the side of the road to give him a ride to town, it quickly grew into something special. He became a familiar and welcome presence, joining me to bring the kids to school, coming to church when he could, and sharing in the rhythms of our daily lives. He didn’t have children of his own who remained close, but he had us, and he had a town that cared for him.

In June 2024, Michael suffered a stroke and spent his remaining months in a nursing facility. Even then, he was not alone. We visited regularly, bringing conversation, comfort, companionship—and root beers.

Michael will be remembered for his love of basketball, his quiet strength, and the gentle way he became part of the lives of those around him. His story is a reminder that family is not always bound by blood, but by love, care, and presence.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Magnolia Baptist Church, Vancleave, MS, with Bro. Chase Elkins officiating.
