Harold "Hal" Hand Donegan Jr. Obituary

November 3, 1937 – April 27, 2025

Harold “Hal” Hand Donegan, Jr. passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 27, 2025 in Anthem, Arizona at the age of 87 with his wife Barbara and family by his side.

Born in White Plains, New York, Hal met his wife Barbara of nearly 66 years while they were both attending the University of Vermont. Hal and Barbara made their first home in Portland, Maine, where Hal began his long, successful career in the insurance industry. There, they welcomed the birth of their daughter Kim. After transferring to Waltham, Massachusetts, Hal and Barbara welcomed the birth of their son Jeff. While living in Syracuse, New York, Hal built a cabin on Graham Lake in Brockville, Ontario where the family enjoyed many summers. In 1973, Hal moved the family West to Palos Verdes Estates, CA. There, he was an active member of the Palos Verdes Breakfast Club, serving as president from 1999 through 2000. In 2006, Hal and Barbara moved to Bainbridge Island, WA to be near family. Hal and Barbara enjoyed many years wintering on the island of Kauai, where they volunteered at the Christ Memorial Church thrift store. After his insurance career ended, Hal focused on building a small fly fishing business. Besides fly fishing, Hal also enjoyed golfing and boating.

Hal is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara, and his two children: Kim (Jim) Basile of Anthem, Arizona, and Jeff (Julie) Donegan of Cave Creek, Arizona. He was a proud grandfather to Emily (Jordan) Mast, Hannah (Jordan) Kowitz, Josh, and Will Donegan. Hal was also a cherished great-grandfather—affectionately known as “Senior Papa” to Peyton, McKenzie and Brooklyn Mast, and Tessa and Jackson Kowitz.

"May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, the rain fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand”
