Mary Slis, 98 years old, of Warren, Michigan, passed away on April 27, 2025.
Mary was born on February 6, 1927, in Detroit to Anthony and Catherine Ziolkowski. On May 5th, 1952, she married John Slis, with whom she shared 45 wonderful years of love, laughter, and partnership.
Family was always at the center of Mary’s life. She is survived by her beloved children, Kathy (Slis) Distelrath, John Slis, and George Slis. Mary’s legacy lives on through her grandchildren, David Distelrath, Laura Distelrath, Kristie Distelrath, Nicole (Slis) Allen, Andrew Slis, and Elysia Slis as well as her great-grandchildren, Liam Allen and Cooper Distelrath. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Slis, and her six siblings.
Mary’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was a devoted member of St. Anne Catholic Church in Warren, Michigan, for over 60 years, where she taught catechism to generations of children. Her husband, John, also served the parish as an usher, and together they built a strong foundation of faith, service, and community.
Throughout her life, Mary was a devoted caregiver, particularly to her special needs son George, and a loving, present grandmother. Her grandchildren Dave, Laura, and Kristie’s most treasured memories were the weekends spent at her home… filled with mini sticks in the basement, Red Wings & Hockey Night in Canada, and dinners at National Coney Island.
Mary’s passion for hockey ran deep. She was a proud Detroit Red Wings season ticket holder for 50 years, cheering on her team with unwavering loyalty. She also found joy in sharing her love of Polish food — and even the occasional plate of frog legs — with her family.
Mary’s open-mindedness, fiery determination, endless humor, and boundless warmth and support were constants in the lives of those who loved her. Even until the very end, her mind remained sharp and her spirit strong. Her presence will be deeply missed but her memory will live on in the countless lives she touched.
Even though she is no longer with us, her love, her stories, and her spirit will live on in every shared memory, every Red Wings game, and every family gathering.
