Nancy Xavier Mattingly, a cherished wife, devoted mother, much-loved grandmother and heart of her family, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025, with her husband Joe by her side, after a courageous six-year journey. Nancy was born on August 13, 1939, to the late Gladys Loretta Anderson and Bernard Gill McDonald in Washington, DC.
Nancy leaves behind her devoted husband, Joseph Clement Mattingly, whom she married on December 2, 1967, at Holy Angels Church in Avenue, MD. Her children Tammy Marie Wilkerson (David) of Great Mills, MD and Rebecca Ann Redding (Gabriel) of Chaptico, MD. Her grandchildren Brittany Goddard (Clarence), David Wilkerson, Casey Wilkerson and Abigail Redding. Her great-grandchildren Andrew, Benjamin, Colton, Haisley and Brooke. Nancy was predeceased by her parents, Gladys and Bernard, her brothers, George, Thomas, James, and Francis McDonald.
Nancy graduated Anacostia High School in 1954. She worked for the Building and Savings Loan Bank, C&P Phone Company and Holy Angels Rectory before embracing her most important role as a full-time mother and wife of 57 years. For over four decades, her love filled their home on Cabbage Alley in Avenue, where she and Joe created a lifetime of memories with their family.
Nancy's life revolved around her family. Her children and grandchildren were the center of her world, and she found her greatest joy in being present for every milestone, every holiday, and the quiet, everyday moments in between. Nancy shared 57 beautiful years of marriage with Joe, building a home filled with laughter, love and lasting memories. She leaves behind a family forever touched by her kindness and unconditional love.
Nancy, a wife, mother, and Nana, will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
The family will receive friends and loved ones on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with prayers recited at 7:00 PM, in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at 11:00 AM in Holy Angels Catholic Church, Avenue, MD. Interment will follow at Our Lady’s Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery, Helen, MD. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandchildren, David, Casey, and Abigail, her great-grandchildren, Andrew and Ben, along with Clarence Goddard. Honorary pallbearer will be Colton Goddard.
