Richard Alden Frost was born on August 9, 1944, in Washington, D.C. at Walter Reed Hospital where his father, Kenneth Albert Frost, was working as an Army photographer. Richard was the first born of Kenneth Albert and Alyne Wortham Frost. His brothers are Harold and James Frost who now live in Asheville N.C.
Richard lived in several states during his early childhood. The family moved to Asheville, N.C. in 1959, where his parents were employed by Eliada Home for Children. His mother worked as a teacher and later as principal while his father worked various jobs for Eliada. Richard attended Ben Lippen High School in Asheville, graduating at the age of 16.
The following year he moved to Crossroads, living with his maternal grandparents, Albert (Judge) and Maggie Wortham. During his years there he attended Henderson County Junior College and worked at the hospital in Athens to help with his expenses. After completing junior college, he went to UT Austin but had to leave and come home because of illness. After his recovery, he returned to college, by enrolling in East Texas State University where he received a degree in science and English at the age of twenty.
In 1965, Richard married Mary Beeson. They moved to Marshall, Texas where he began his teaching career. He and his wife became the proud parents of a baby boy, Robert David Frost.
Mr. Frost taught biology honors at Marshall High for thirty-eight years and received many accolades during his teaching career, such as being named Teacher of the Year multiple times. He became the Science Coordinator for the district, gave presentations at science teachers conferences, directed science fairs and proudly mentored many beginning teachers.
While teaching, he continued his education by attending various universities during summer sessions and in 1970 received a master’s degree in Botany from the University of Texas at Austin. After receiving his master’s degree, he never missed an opportunity to advance his educational goals by taking additional graduate courses.
After retiring, he was devoted to his mother as her caregiver. He spent many enjoyable hours reading and collecting books, which was a passion he shared with his mother. He also enjoyed playing the guitar, writing stories and haiku poems, square dancing, photography, and hours as king of the remote.
