Joseph F. Baal, known affectionately as Joe to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lutz, FL. Born on June 27, 1940, in Inwood, Long Island, NY, Joe's journey through life was marked by his selfless, generous, and loving nature. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, commitment, and community service that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Joe is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Marilyn, and his loving children: Michael, married to Bridgette, and their sons Jake and Luke; Jeanne Rosenbaum, married to Robert, and their daughter Sophia; and Jaymie DePalo, married to Stephen, with their three children Arianna, Luca, and Enzo, whom Joe affectionately nicknamed Yogi. He is also remembered by his brothers, John and Steve Baal. Joe was preceded in death by his beloved son Joseph G. Baal in 2011, his father John Baal, his mother Mary Wells, and his sister Joan Heim.
Joe's educational journey led him to study Fire Education at Oklahoma State University, equipping him with the knowledge and skills that would define his professional life. He dedicated 27 years to the FDNY, serving with bravery and distinction. His commitment to his community extended beyond his career, as he volunteered for over 50 years with the Inwood fire department.
The tragic events of September 11, 2001, called Joe back to his city, where he worked with the Counseling Services Unit (CSU) of the FDNY. For 19 years following the attacks, he served selflessly, assisting families and firefighters as they dealt with grief and sickness. In addition, Joe worked security for Ruth Eckerd Hall for many years, always ensuring the safety of the artists that performed there.
Joe's personal journey was one of triumph and transformation. He celebrated 52 years of sobriety, a testament to his strength and resilience. His experience with sobriety wasn't kept to himself; Joe mentored countless individuals, sharing his story to inspire and encourage others on their own paths to recovery.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Joe's love for the New York Yankees was unmatched. He traveled across the country to support his team and fulfilled a lifelong dream by attending his first World Series in October 2024. His passion for sports also found a home at the horse track, where he spent many enjoyable days.
Joe's life was not without its challenges. He battled complications from 9/11 related Pulmonary Fibrosis with the same determination and courage that characterized his life's work. His fight was a reflection of his character, facing each day with grace and fortitude.
As we remember Joe, we are reminded of the words of Albert Schweitzer, "The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others." Joe embodied this spirit in every aspect of his life, touching the hearts and lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Joseph F. Baal's story is one of unwavering service, enduring love, and the indomitable spirit of giving. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we carry forward the lessons he taught through his actions and the warmth he spread through his presence. Joe's memory will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and all the lives he touched.
