Shirley Sweet-Hagelgans Obituary

Shirley Sweet-Hagelgans, 79, of Hazle Township, died on Saturday, April 26th at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Hazleton on June 21, 1945, she was the daughter of Louis and Flora (Pegarella) Anderson and spent all her life in the area.

Shirley graduated from Hazleton High School, Class of 1964 and went on to attend Rudemar Cosmetology School in Philadelphia. She graduated in 1965 as a beauty culture operator. Once she started her family, she chose to stay at home and raise her 3 children and later decided to go back to work in the beauty industry. In 1986 she started her own beauty shop on 5th and Alter Street in Hazleton. Her shop was called Shirley’s Hair Salon where she worked for over 35 years in a business she truly loved. Over the years several of her clients became her friends. She retired in 2021.

Her mother was an ancestor from Dambel, Austria and both her parents were of Tyrolean decent. Shirley embraced her family heritage, especially enjoying the music and dancing.

Shirley loved to go out and enjoy life. Many Spring and Summer evenings she spent attending the Freeland and Beaver Meadows Concerts that were held in the parks. She also loved to follow her favorite band, “The Swingmasters” as they played polka music throughout the community.

She was an early riser on Saturday mornings, never missing a garage sale and a good deal. For several years Shirley enjoyed attending Zumba classes and enjoyed watching the Hazleton High School girls’ basketball games.

Aside from being out, socializing and meeting new people, she also loved being at home and entertaining family and friends. Christmas time, along with the decorations and family dinners, was always very special to her.

Along with her parents, Shirley is preceded in death by her 1st husband Carl Sweet, 2nd husband Ronald Hagelgans, brother Louis Anderson, sister Dorothy Walsh Braddock and daughter Darlene Beck.

Surviving is her son Carl G. Sweet, daughter Denise McCleery and her husband Rick of Florida, son-in-law Robert Beck of Coatsville, PA. Grandchildren Brittney Genovese and her husband Pete of Florida, Connor and Wyatt Beck of Coatsville, PA, great-grandchildren Jasmin and Natalie McCleery, Sabastian, Carter and Logan Genovese, brother Robert Anderson and several nieces and nephews.
