Fred was born on April 19, 1933, in Paw Paw, Illinois, to Harold and Maude (Fluer) Burnette, Fred graduated from Paw Paw High School in 1951. At just 16 years old, he joined the National Guard and, amid the Korean War, was called to active duty upon his graduation, reporting to Fort Leonard Wood. After his military service, he married Mary Harvey on August 16, 1953, in Mendota, Illinois, with whom he shared an incredible 71 years of marriage. A tireless community leader, Fred was devoted to the American Legion, where he diligently served as Commander of Post 540. His passion for service extended to the Lion’s Club, where he once held the position of President. He took great pride in spearheading initiatives at Veteran’s Park including the Walk of Honor and fundraising efforts for the park’s gazebo. Fred and Mary also played a vital role in raising funds for flagpoles and monuments commemorating fallen veterans at Restland Cemetery in Mendota. A Cub Master, Boy Scout leader, and little league coach, he was committed both to Mendota’s past and its future.

Fred is survived by his loving wife, Mary Burnette of Mendota, IL; his sons, Jeffrey (Sheila) of Elgin, IL and Duane (Denise) of Mendota, IL; his three grandchildren, Brandon (Katie) of Bloomington, IL, Sean (Isabela) of Manhattan, NY, Austin of Chicago, IL; and his great-grandson, Benjamin of Bloomington, IL.
