Daryl John Broedel, a beloved son, sibling, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 26th, 2025, at the age of 71, surrounded by love and cherished memories. Born in Utica, NY, on May 2nd, 1953, Daryl lived a life of kindness and humor.
Daryl was part of the last class to graduate 6th grade at North Brookfield Union School, then attended Waterville High School, class of 1971, and was a lifelong resident of the Waterville and North Brookfield area. Daryl spent his younger years working for the local grocery stores Grand Union and Food King. He enjoyed competitive softball and played on many of the local teams through the years. People still talk about a triple play he executed and if he dropped that line-drive intentionally playing shortstop. He was an excellent bowler and enjoyed many rounds of golf, including a hole-in-one at Barker Brook Golf Club on hole #11.
Daryl was employed at BGM Supply in Utica, NY, where he worked as a master plumber specializing in commercial and residential plumbing systems, including water pump and hot water tank service. Daryl also worked as an independent contractor for Agway Energy and as a security guard heading into retirement.
In July of 2018, his courageous battle with pancreatic cancer began. Daryl started treatment, including a successful series of difficult procedures and hospital visits, both planned and unplanned, which provided him several more quality years enjoying life. Daryl’s family would like to give a very special thanks to his oncologist, Dr. Rahul Seth, and the entire Upstate University Hospital team and palliative team for helping Daryl defy tremendous odds during his journey. Also, a special thanks to Dr. David Linehan at the University of Rochester Medical Center and the entire team at the Wilmot Cancer Institute.
Daryl could always be seen cutting the grass and doing other yardwork at his Waterville home on White Street. He will forever be remembered as a loving, humorous, quiet, and kindhearted man. He enjoyed sports and was a lifelong fan of the Cincinnati Reds. He also enjoyed reading books, crossword puzzles, and the Sunday paper. He loved having a reheated cup of coffee in the microwave, which may have been days old. He loved listening to the radio and never missed Ed O’Brien’s sports trivia program at his kitchen table. He had a simple view on life. Daryl never owned a cell phone or smartphone. He did eventually warm up to the “internet” and just about had the mouse double right-click maneuver down. He loved spending time with his “pumpkin,” granddaughter Amelia, who always brought a smile to his face.
Daryl is predeceased by his father, Jacob Broedel; his in-laws, Frances and Ralph Butrym; his sister-in-law, Deb Hines Broedel; and his brother-in-law, Steven Maine. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rosemary; his son, Jeffrey, and daughter-in-law, Lorie Broedel; and his cherished grandchildren, Amelia Broedel and Caiden Moynihan. He is also survived by his mother, Dana Broedel; his five brothers, Dan (Chris), Bruce, Mark (Cindy), Richard (Brenda), and Greg; one sister, Terry (Jim McFadden); his sister-in-law, Mary Kathryn Maine; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
With all of our hearts, we would like to give a special thanks to brother/uncle Mark Broedel for all that he has done for Daryl and his family, and another special thank you to Stephanie Cornish for all she has helped with.
