Steven "Steve" Duane Anderson Obituary

Steven “Steve” Anderson

January 7, 1963 – April 27, 2025

Steven Duane Anderson was born on January 7, 1963, in Wadena, Minnesota, to Edwin Bertelson and Mildred Anderson (Volkers). As a boy, he grew up in the Deer Creek area and attended Deer Creek High School, later earning his GED. After school, he set off for the oil rigs of Louisiana, where he built a reputation for working hard and never backing down from a challenge.

Steve was married to Kathy Burcham, and during their ten years together they welcomed three beautiful children: Natasha, Kyre, and Megan. They made their home in Wadena, where Steve always had a project going and was happiest surrounded by his family.

On January 12, 2004, Steve married the love of his life and longtime friend of fifteen years, Lora Silbernagel. Their bond was rooted in years of friendship and a deep understanding of each other. Together, they made their home in Bluffton to start, and eventually settled in Deer Creek in 2005, where they built a life full of laughter, love, and quiet, everyday joys.

Steve was a man of many talents and even more heart. He loved the outdoors—deer hunting and fishing were some of his favorite ways to spend time. He also had a knack for fixing things, whether it was a vehicle, a home project, or simply lending a hand to someone in need. Above all else, Steve loved time spent at home with Lora, their blended family, and his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.

Steven “Steve” Anderson, age 62, of Deer Creek, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, at Essentia Health in Fargo, North Dakota, surrounded by love.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Edwin and Mildred; his grandparents; his sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Greg Erickson; and his brother, Robert J. Anderson Jr.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Lora Anderson of Deer Creek; his children: Angela (Sean) Lawler of Rochester, NY; Mara Hochstetler of Newton, KS; Marlena (Jeff) Schmidt of Graceville, MN; Natasha (Greg) Robertson of Wadena, MN; James (Alicia) Anderson of Monticello, MN; Kyre Hatcher of Henning, MN; Megan (Craig) Habben of Motley, MN; Amanda Anderson of Wadena, MN; and Amie (Brendan) McMillan of Alexandria, MN; twenty-one cherished grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He is also survived by his sisters, Shari (Rick) Rehm of Henning, MN and Sylvia (Mike) Ergen of Crosslake, MN; brothers, Rick (Jen) Anderson and Wayne Anderson, both of Perham, MN; and many extended family members and friends who will always remember his quick wit, big heart, and generous spirit.

A celebration of Steve’s life will be held as an open house on Saturday, May 24th, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Karvonen Funeral Home in Wadena. Burial of his cremated remains will follow at Trinity Cemetery in Henning, Minnesota.

Honorary pallbearers are Robert Anderson III, James Anderson, Sean Lawler, Greg Robertson, Craig Habben, and Brendan McMillan.

Though his time on earth feels far too short, Steve leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering loyalty. He will be remembered always.
