Peter Joseph Forbes, of Braintree, formerly of Quincy, passed away on April 26, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Peter was born on August 22, 1958, the third of nine children to John L. Forbes and Nora Theresa (Donohoe) Forbes. Peter and his siblings grew up in Quincy and graduated from Archbishop Williams High School. Peter excelled in academics and athletics - he was captain of the varsity basketball team and was inducted into the Archbishop Williams Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.
Peter attended The University of Massachusetts, Lowell on a full scholarship, where he studied Sociology and was captain of the men’s basketball team.
Peter began working at the Department of Youth Services as a Group Care Worker in Roslindale in 1983 and finished his career as the longest serving Commissioner in the history of the agency.
Peter lived his life in service to others, spending his 39 years at DYS counseling and guiding at-risk youth. After retiring in 2021, Peter worked with The Council of Juvenile Justice Administrators (CJJA) where he mentored professionals in the field of youth justice and provided invaluable expertise to juvenile justice programs across the country. Peter spent years working with the youth anti-violence organization Roca. He also had the opportunity to teach graduate level courses at Suffolk University.
Peter was a lifelong fan of the Boston Celtics and an enthusiastic follower of college basketball. For many years he attended the Big East Basketball Tournament in New York City with his brothers, nephews, and friends. Peter coached each of his sons in youth sports, primarily in basketball. He also coached and refereed hundreds of young athletes in Braintree over the years.
Peter enjoyed reading, traveling with his family, and going for daily walks with his wife. He cherished spending time with his extended family during the yearly Forbes “Cape Week”.
His friends and family looked up to Peter’s ability to lead by example. Those who knew him will remember his sense of humor, original sayings, integrity, and dedication to his work and family.
Peter is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Kathleen (Lewis) Forbes, his four sons Peter, Brian, John and James, daughter-in-law McKayla Forbes, and his siblings: John and wife Cindy of East Boston, William and wife Susan of Methuen, Ann Sullivan and husband Duane, Mary Gallotto and husband Mario, Paul and wife Susan, Joan Dunn and husband Jim, Terry Free and husband Mark, all of Quincy, and Michael of East Boston.
