Rachael Lynn Sheinfeld, born March 14, 1981, beloved daughter, sister, and friend, passed away on the morning of April 26, 2025, at the age of 44.
Born and raised in Virginia, Rachael spent most of her life in Charlottesville. She graduated from Albemarle High School in 1999, where she was a member of the high school choir. Before achieving her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher, she worked as a babysitter and nanny for many local families. She helped shape the lives of numerous children, nurturing them through their childhoods and into adulthood. Many of these relationships blossomed into true friendships that endured across time and distance.
A dedicated and compassionate educator, Rachael earned her associate’s degree from Piedmont Virginia Community College in 2006. She went on to earn her Master’s degree in Early Elementary Education from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2010 and held a post-baccalaureate licensure in Special Education from Mary Baldwin University in 2013. She also studied and spoke American Sign Language. Rachael devoted her career to working with children with special needs, and her patience, warmth, and unwavering commitment left a lasting impact on countless young lives and their families.
She taught first at Fluvanna County Middle and High School, and most recently at William Wetsel Middle School and Madison County High School. Her students affectionately called her “Ms. Sunshine,” a reflection of the joy and positivity she brought to every classroom.
Rachael was known for her generous spirit and her deep passion for bringing people together. Whether in the classroom, among friends, or within her community, she radiated kindness, compassion, and connection.
Rachael was an avid reader and especially loved young adult authors—particularly anything by Tamora Pierce. Her love language was gift-giving. She was often generous to a fault and took particular delight in crafting homemade gifts, then making them impossibly difficult to open.
Rachael was also a devoted animal lover, raising and caring for numerous pets throughout her life. She volunteered at local SPCAs and showed that the best way to love an animal is to give it a good home. She loved traveling, going to concerts, and going on food adventures. She loved to cook and frequently brought friends and family together for delicious home-cooked feasts.
While Rachael struggled with numerous health conditions over the course of her lifetime, she was known for maintaining a positive attitude amidst extremely adverse circumstances—always demonstrating her strength, her character, and her special ability to see the bright side of life. Her strength and endurance were inspiring to all who knew her.
She is survived by her twin sister, Gillian Gaye Sheinfeld; her animal babies—dogs Artemis and Lux, and cats Lilly and Athena—as well as her extended family and the many friends she made throughout her life who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her mother, Marlene Sheinfeld; her father, Howard Sheinfeld; and her grandmother, Adelaide Grant.
Her funeral will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Monticello Memory Gardens, followed by a picnic and celebration of life to honor her memory at Chris Greene Lake; guests are encouraged to bring a dish to share.
Rachael will be deeply missed and remembered with love, gratitude, and enduring admiration by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
