Carol Ann Flanagan (nee Zachmann), age 77, of Hawthorne, passed away after a battle with cancer on Sunday, April 27, 2025.

Born and raised in Paterson, Carol became a resident of both New York City and Yonkers before settling in Hawthorne almost 40 years ago. After earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Rutgers she served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant charge nurse receiving the National Defense Service Medal. Carol had many nursing jobs and worked as a corporate nurse for the State Farm Insurance Company for much of her career. In her spare time, Carol was an avid birder and member of Fyke Nature Association, serving as secretary, president and trustee. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was an active member of the Glen Rock Library Knitting Group.

Carol was the beloved wife of the late George C. Flanagan. They were married almost 40 years until his death in 2012. Loving sister of Linda Lemke of Piscataway and her late husband Paul. Dear aunt of Jennifer Lemke, her husband Christopher Henry and dog Derby of Piscataway. She is also survived by many dear cousins, Susan Clark and husband Bruce, Barbara Daniel and husband Dave, Ken Moll, Marge Williamson, Allan Bornkamp and wife Jean, Susan Calia and Gale Bornkamp. 

Cremation will take place privately. A funeral service followed by military honors will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Browning-Forshay Funeral Home, 557 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne at 3:30pm. Friends may visit prior to the service at the funeral home on Saturday from 1:00pm – 3:30pm. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Christian Appalachian Project or to a local food bank.
