Arthur Henry Flynn, Jr. Obituary

Arthur Henry James Francis Flynn, Jr., born on November 3, 1942, passed away peacefully at his home in Maryland on April 26, 2025, surrounded by his family. Artie was a loving husband, devoted father, and wonderful Pop Pop.

Artie is survived by his wife Denise, his six children, Susan, Kathleen, Jim, Chuck, Matt and Kaitlyn, and their spouses, Finbarr, Santo, Jen, Tracey, Marianne, and Bobby. Artie was a devoted Pop Pop to his fifteen grandchildren, Meghan, Emma, Elizabeth, Xander, Andrew, Maggie, Sarah, Grace, Nate, Nick, AJ, Matt, Conor, Caiden and Vivian, and a loving brother to two sisters and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Artie grew up in Queens, New York, and enlisted in the United States Navy after graduating high school. Artie was honorably discharged and then started his career as an electrician with IBEW Local 3 Electricians, continuing a family legacy that spanned three generations.

Artie retired from IBEW Local 3 at the age of 60 to enjoy a quieter, slower lifestyle with Denise. Artie loved fishing on his boat and camping with family. From the early days of camping in a tent to his more recent days of camping in a deluxe RV, Artie travelled up and down the east coast and other destinations, often joined by family and friends. His favorite Willie Nelson song, “On the Road Again,” was both a literal and figurative theme song of his retirement with Denise.

Artie also volunteered with the USS Intrepid with the Former Crew Members Association. He has a Seat of Honor aboard the ship. He also loved to build and volunteered with Rebuilding Kent County when he moved to Maryland.

Artie loved the holidays and hosting large family gatherings at his and Denise’s home when they lived in Bay Shore. He especially looked forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve every year and loved being surrounded by his family.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday May 1, 2025 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Frederick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home in West Islip. Artie will be laid to rest on Friday, May 2, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. at the Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn.

Artie was one of the strongest and bravest men we’ve ever known. He lived a life worth living and was loved beyond measure. He is on “On the Road Again” for his final journey to rest in peace after a long and courageous battle.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in Artie’s name.
