John F. Flannigan Obituary

John Frederick Flannigan, 87, of Oradell passed peacefully on April 27, 2025 surrounded by his family.

Born on June 16, 1937, John was raised by his parents John and Catherine (affectionately known as Ducky) in Hackensack, NJ where he attended Holy Trinity High School. After graduating in 1955, he went on to earn a B.S. in Business Administration at New England College. After service in the US Army, he joined his father in the family mechanical contracting business, J.P. Flannigan, Inc. in Hackensack. John was a licensed master plumber and electrician. He later worked for the City of Hackensack as a Project Manager before retiring in 2015.

John and his wife Virginia cherished 41 years together where they happily blended their families. He was the proud father of his children, Suzanne, John and Katherine and Maureen. The family treasures the memories of weekends away in Seaside Park on “the boat” and upstate in Woodstock, NY. John enjoyed many ski trips to Vermont as well as rounds of golf on Cape Cod with his sister, Joan and family. At home, John loved warm nights on the porch watching his beloved Yankees and NY Giants as well as growing his tomato plants each summer. A lifelong businessman in Hackensack, he made many lifelong friendships; he looked forward to his weekly “Garden Club meetings” with his colleagues.

John was a long-time parishioner at Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Haworth, NJ. Faith was an important part of this life.

Remaining to cherish John’s memory are his wife, Virginia; children Suzanne (Ed) Golden of River Edge, John (Stephanie) Flannigan of Essex, VT, Katherine (Chris) Drury of Oradell and Maureen (Ed) Joel of Ho-Ho-Kus; grandchildren Patrick, Anne, and Margaret Joel; Brendan, Kate, and Sean Golden; Kaylie, Amelia, and A.J. Flannigan; sister Joan Pytal; niece Jennifer Underwood, and nephews Paul and Tim Pytal.

John was predeceased by his father John, mother Catherine and brother-in-law, Paul Pytal.

Visitation will be held at William G. Basralian Funeral Home in Oradell, NJ on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at 3-7PM. A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart R.C. Church in Haworth, NJ on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at 10AM with a burial following.
