Marlene “Miki” Matteson, 79 of Elderon, died peacefully on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Miki was born on June 8, 1945, in Wausau and was the daughter of Edwin W. Karschney and Ardale (Viertel) Karschney.
Miki was united in marriage to Floyd O. Matteson on October 30, 1965, in Neenah, Wisconsin.
Throughout her life, she had been actively involved in all community events in “her” Village of Elderon where she was born and raised. She would share many stories about her childhood friends from Elderon; Dianne Kluck, Kitty Beckwith, Janey Schwalbach, Miki Hamm, Dianna Groshek and Patti Switalla. Miki wore so many hats in and around the village throughout her lifetime including a bank teller at the Elderon Bank (she even experienced robberies and lived to tell the tale), she served on the Village of Elderon board, served during elections and events, she was the owner and operator of the Elderon Food Store, was the Fire Warden, PostMistress, and Dog Catcher. Adding to this extensive list, she was the president of the VFW Auxiliary to Post 8068 for a decade, she was the treasurer of the Our Savior’s Ladies Aide, The Elderon Improvement Club and sponsored and played on many local leagues such as her favorite horseshoe team that included Miki Ostrowski, Jerelin Amundson, Shirley Czerwonka, Peggy Woyak, Emerick Zoromski, Jim Kulinski, Judy Uttech, Louise Schulist, Paul Norrbom, Ray Severson, Cindy Matteson, and Brian Matteson.
In her retired years, Miki became the armchair historian to the history of the village and its people. Everyone knew that if they asked her a question she had the answer. She used this passion to assist with the Elderon News in the Wittenberg Enterprise and Birnamwood News. On Sundays, Miki could be found at the ballpark watching her beloved Whiskey Jacks play. Most everyone saw her vehicle parked under the lights and scoreboard watching every play. She was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, Milwaukee Bucks and Wisconsin Badgers.
Miki is survived by her husband, Floyd O. Matteson; sons, Floyd D. Matteson, Brian (Cindy) Matteson, and Brad Matteson; grandchildren, Ashly (Aaron) Korbisch, Hilory (Robby) Shattuck, Wyatt (Courtney) Matteson, Lydia Matteson and Nonah Matteson; great grandchildren, Jackson, Banks, Joseph, Rome, and Cora Jane; sisters, Karen Carlson and Sandy Vollmer and brother, Bill (Kay) Karschney. Miki was preceded in death by her parents; father and mother-in-law; brother, Edwin ‘ Duke’ Karschney, brothers-in-law, John 'Don' Carlson and Jim Vollmer; also her nieces, Cheri Steckbauer and Stacy Karschney and great nephews, Jason and Jed Rivard.
Floyd would like to thank Interim Palliative and Hospice, especially Danielle, Jenny and Megan for their kindness and support. He would also like to thank Pastor Skaaland for his visits and continued support during Miki’s final months.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM, on Friday, May 2, 2025, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Elderon. Rev. Harvey Abrahamson will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Rest Cemetery, Elderon. Visitation will be on Thursday, from 4-7 PM at the church, and again on Friday, from 9 AM until the time of service at the church.
