Sister Rose Schum was called home to God on April 23, 2025. She is survived by nieces and nephews, many friends and the Sisters of Mercy.
Sister Rose entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1945 and professed her final vows in 1951. From 1948 until 1951 she did her Nursing training at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. Her skills in nursing were used in a variety of settings: Mercy High School, St. James Mercy Hospital, Hornell, and for many years in the Mercy Motherhouse Infirmary. In 1984 she established Mercy Care Center in Elmira with Sister Howard. This was a respite care center serving the elderly and their caregivers.
The Mass of Christian burial will take place at Mercy Center Chapel, 1437 Blossom Road on May 3, 2025 at 10:00 AM and livestreamed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMvH-t2Gjss
Visitation will take place 45 minutes prior to the funeral liturgy.
