Bernadette R. “Marty” Heinowski Obituary
Bernadette R. “Marty” Heinowski, age 97, of Hillsdale, passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at Story Point of Grand Ledge. She was born on July 17, 1927, in Portland, Michigan, to Anthony and Pauline (Smith) Martin. She married Carl “Bud” Heinowski on October 13, 1951, and he preceded her in death on January 29, 2023.
Marty graduated from Portland High School in 1945 and went on to train at Borgess Hospital at St. Camilus School of Nursing to become a registered nurse. She worked for several years as a registered nurse at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing. After living in South Carolina, Lansing and Portland, Michigan, she and Bud moved to Hillsdale. Marty worked for sixteen years as a nurse for Hillsdale County Youth Home and also handled adoption and foster licensing for Hillsdale County Probate Court. She was an active member at St. Anthony Catholic Church and was a member of the League of Catholic Women, a past president of the St. Anthony Parish Council, the School Board and the Altar Society. She also held the position of Coordinator of the Homebound Ministry and volunteered as Minister of the Eucharist and representative of the Diocesan County of Aging for the Hillsdale and Adrian area. Marty also volunteered as a nurse for the American Red Cross Blood Drives in Hillsdale for many years.
Marty is survived by five children, Bill (Kathy), Dave (Pam), Rick (Lori), Jim (Carol) Heinowski, and Anne (Paul) Nagi; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 71 years, Bud Heinowski; and two siblings, Marilyn Murray, and Charles Martin.
A Memorial Mass for Bernadette “Marty” Heinowski will take place on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale with Fr. David Reamsnyder officiating. Interment will follow at St. Anthony Cemetery in Hillsdale. The family would like to receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.
