With great sadness we announce that Karen J. Mudra passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at the age of 77. Born in Chicago on October 10, 1947 to Edward and Bernadette (Barron) Genatempo, Karen dedicated her life to creating a warm and nurturing home for her husband of 57 years, Emil, and their two children Charlie and Kathi (Scott) Moore.

A lifelong resident of Downers Grove, Illinois, Karen graduated from Downers Grove (North) High School and eventually worked for School District 58 as a Washington School Librarian and the Village of Downers Grove. She later retired to care for her parents, a reflection of her selfless nature and a life devoted to helping others. It was during her time working at Chicago Burlington Railroad that she met and eventually married the love of her life, Emil, in 1967. Not by coincidence, Karen & Emil enjoyed cross-country travel by train to destinations like San Francisco and Washington, DC — although she did take her first plane ride at age 66 to Boston (and loved it).

Karen’s favorite memories were undoubtedly family camping trips to Yellowstone, Turkey Run in Indiana and South Haven, Michigan for more than a decade. She also loved music, reading and fashion - always dressed up for any occasion. Karen cherished classic films and television, especially Gone With the Wind and I Love Lucy.

A devout Catholic of unwavering faith, Karen was a lifelong member of the St. Mary of Gostyn church, where she was active as a Choir Booster and beloved member of the parish community. She lived a beautiful life and leaves behind a shining example of caring, kindness, humility and quiet strength.

Karen was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and great-aunt and is preceded in death by her parents Edward and Bernadette. She leaves behind her greatest legacy in husband Emil Mudra, their children Charlie (56) and Kathi (52) Moore, sister Janet (Tom) Marks along with her treasured Yorkies Molly and Millie.

Visitation to be held on Monday, April 28, 2025, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Adams-Winterfield & Sullivan Funeral Home, 4343 Main Street, Downers Grove, Illinois 60515.

Funeral Mass to be held on Tuesday, April 29 at 10:00am at St. Mary Gostyn Catholic Church, 445 Prairie Ave, Downers Grove, IL 60515. 

Interment Assumption Catholic Cemetery, 1S510 Winfield Rd, Wheaton, IL 60189
