George was the son of George and Edna (Burris) Wood, born on May 30, 1935, in Wewoka, Oklahoma. George was brought up and attended school in Holdenville, graduating Holdenville High School with the class of 1953. He went on to play football at Coffeyville Junior College in Coffeyville, Kansas and the University of Tulsa. He then went on to play football and study Business at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. He was married at a young age to Sue Hamil and blessed with three beautiful children; RhaeLynn, Barry, and Andy. George came to work as Vice President of People's State Bank in Holdenville. While in Holdenville, he served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, was active in the Holdenville Quarterback Club, Round Up Club, and Kiwanis. The family later transitioned to Marietta, Oklahoma, where George worked for 25 years at First Bank of Marietta. While in Marietta, he was active in the Love County Junior Livestock Association, Marietta Quarterback Club, and served on the Love County Hospital Board. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Marietta where he served as a deacon. He retired in 2000 and moved back to Holdenville. He was an avid horse lover and active member of the American Quarter Horse Association. More than anything, he loved spending time with his grandkids.
George is preceded in death by his parents, George and Edna Wood; sister, Josephine Wood; and son-in-law, David Bair. He is survived by his wife, Sue; three children: RhaeLynn Bair of Bixby, Barry Wood (Joetta) of Holdenville, and Andy Wood (Kim) of Holdenville; seven grandchildren: Josh Wood (Jenni), Luke Wood (Cheyenne), Jennifer Bair Robinson, Adam Bair (Angie), Zac McGill (Blair), Tristan Laster (Aaron), and Zaida Wood; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 28, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hudson Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Holdenville. George will be laid to rest at the Yeager Cemetery. Rev. Dane Robinson is the officiating minister.
Pallbearers are Josh Wood, Luke Wood, Adam Bair, J.D. Robinson, Aaron Laster, and Cale Shepherd. Honorary Pallbearers are Timothy Walden and Connor Walden.
There will be no visitation, however, if you are unable to attend the service you may come by the funeral home on Saturday, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., or Sunday, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., for viewing.
