It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Betty Jean Kirkland, who transitioned from this life on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the age of 69. Born on October 31, 1955, in Jacksonville, Florida, Betty spent her entire life surrounded by the vibrant culture and warmth of her hometown. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who brought joy and love into the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
Betty was the cherished daughter of David and Daisy Kirkland, and she is now reunited with her beloved parents, as well as her siblings—Mary Climer, David Kirkland III, Willie Cecil Kirkland, Connie Ross Kirkland, Marvin Kirkland Sr., and Otis Kirkland—who preceded her in death. She leaves behind a loving family that includes her one and only daughter, Twalla Kirkland, and her adored grandchildren, Sa'Derria Johnson, Leonte' Waters, and Sean Washington Jr. Betty was also blessed with great-grandchildren Jai, Jordynn, and Jari, who were the light of her life.
Betty was proud to have graduated from Duval County Public Schools, where she completed her education at New Stanton High School. Her work life was marked by dedication and service, spending over a decade at Walgreens and later working as a cashier at a local gas station. However, her most fulfilling role came as a caregiver, a position she embraced with passion and pride. She had a natural inclination to care for others, always ensuring that the needs of those around her were met.
Family was everything to Betty. She came from a close-knit family, and her love for her daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all her nieces and nephews were unwavering. She was known for her quiet yet loyal nature, embodying the essence of a devoted mother and grandmother who cherished the simple things in life. Betty found joy in spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating memories that will be cherished forever.
A lover of music and an avid giver, Betty's heart was as big as her personality was bold. She possessed a unique charm that made her unforgettable, especially during her favorite time of year. Born on Halloween, she celebrated her birthday with enthusiasm, often beginning the festivities in September with decorations and spooky surprises that brought smiles to her loved ones’ faces. She made sure no one forgot her special day and would often give out birthday gifts ahead of time, sharing her joy with others.
Despite her shy and quiet demeanor, Betty lived with a profound love for God and an immense appreciation for her family and friends. She had a knack for bringing people together, and her home was always a welcoming space for gatherings filled with laughter, love, and memories. She enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, including her love of Coca-Cola, crabs, and moments of solitude.
Betty is survived by Leon McFadden whom she raised, cared for and loved dearly like her very own and will forever be known as the son she did not birth but was her son for life; her siblings, Terris Kirkland (Vera), Roosevelt Kirkland, Brenda Kirkland, and Michael Kirkland, alongside special family members, Elaine Kirkland, Lovely Kirkland, Dedra Kirkland, Marvin Kirkland Jr., Leon McFadden, and Jerome Allen Kirkland. She also leaves behind close friends, Denise Payne "Niecy", Balerie Pender (Joyce), Betty Nelson, Shari Walker, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives who mourn her loss.
While she may no longer be with us in body, her spirit will forever remain woven into the fabric of our lives through the love she shared and the memories she created. We will carry her legacy in our hearts, celebrating the beautiful soul that she was. Rest in peace, Betty. You will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
