Cynthia Farbaniec of Glens Falls and Bolton Landing, NY, passed away peacefully on April 23 at the age of 86. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who never ceased to lift up others with her encouragement, wisdom and love.
Born in Paterson, NJ, Cynthia was the only daughter of Herbert and Mildred (Ackerman) Post. Her strong Christian faith was formed in part by her family’s membership in Paterson’s Broadway Baptist Church. Cindy would stay actively involved in church throughout her life, up until her final years as a member of Harrisena Community Church in Queensbury, NY.
Cindy was known by all as an individual with an unwavering spirit and joyous heart that she generously shared with others, most notably her husband of 62 years, Philip John Farbaniec, who predeceased her in 2021.
Phil and Cindy were known locally as the owners of Bluebird Cottages on Lake George and Bluebirds’ Nest Preschool in Glens Falls. Cindy founded the school in 1983 and operated it for more than 30 years. The school’s motto, ‘You give them roots, we’ll give them wings’ embodied Cindy’s vision for inspiring children to reach for their dreams.
Cindy earned her bachelor’s degree from William Paterson University and firmly believed in the role of education in helping others achieve their goals. A lifelong advocate for women’s education, she was an active member of the American Association of University Women and a founding member of the North Country Association for the Education of Young Children. Cindy devoted significant time and energy to her roles as president and chaplain of the Glens Falls chapter of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.), an organization helping women around the world advance through education.
But the central story of Cindy’s life revolved around her family. During the early years of her marriage to Phil, the couple’s sense of adventure inspired them to move several times across the U.S. as they grew their family to include four children by 1972. The family of six settled in Allendale, New Jersey in the early 1970s, where Cindy worked as a preschool teacher and Phil continued his career in manufacturing management.
In a pivotal move for the family in the early 1980s, Phil and Cindy pursued their dream of owning a business in the Lake George area. Some of the happiest moments in the couple’s lives were operating Bluebird Cottages in Bolton Landing from 1981 through 2003. Cindy loved welcoming guests and managing the business alongside Phil and their four children. It was during the Bluebird years that Cindy became an active daily swimmer. ‘Porch pancakes’ on Sunday mornings and countless family dinners filled with lively conversation were hallmarks of life at the lake. Cindy loved a sun-drenched boat ride and trips to ‘ice cream island’ with the grandchildren.
In addition to running the cottage business, the couple established Bluebirds’ Nest Preschool in Glens Falls in 1983. Cindy offered special programming including classes like "Mommy and Me" and Kindermusik, in which she shared her love of music through her voice and her guitar, which she fondly named Gertrude. Cindy also served as owner and director of The Learning School at Hudson Falls for many years. Up until her final days, Cindy often met former students and parents at work in the community who expressed the value and joy the schools added to their lives.
One of the most remarkable things about Cindy was the breadth of her interests. Her love of music inspired her to become a principal organizer of Bolton Landing’s annual folk festival for many years. Cindy also served as a trustee of the Bolton Free Library and as a volunteer at Bolton Landing’s Sembrich Museum. Her passion for the Adirondacks inspired her to take up cross-country skiing, and she was well known at Garnet Hill for her enthusiasm and bright pink ski pants. Indeed, Cindy was a person who loved where she lived and felt true joy in sharing it with family and friends.
While her interests were wide-ranging, they never usurped Cindy’s greatest passion: her family. Cindy was happiest with her children and grandchildren around her, enjoying everyday moments and celebrations alike.
Cindy’s brave spirit, warmth and unselfish love for others will live on in all who knew her. Cynthia is survived by her son, Jeffrey and his wife, Beth, and their two children, Daniel and Sylvie; her daughter, Allison and her husband, John; Allison’s daughter, Elizabeth and Elizabeth’s husband, Landon, as well as John’s two children, Maya and Seth; her daughter, Kristi and her son, George; and her son, David and his wife, Patricia, and their daughter, Miranda.
Family and friends may call from 3 – 5 pm on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the Singleton Sullivan Potter Funeral Home, 407 Bay Road, Queensbury. A funeral service will be held immediately following calling hours at 5 pm at the funeral home.
Burial will be held privately for the family in Bolton Rural Cemetery, Bolton Landing, New York.
Donations in Cynthia’s honor may be made to the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter CC and mailed to Julie McGilpin, 497 Glen Street, Glens Falls, NY, 12801, or to the Lake George Land Conservancy.
