William (Bill) Preston Cox, husband of Frances Harting Cox died the morning of April 23, 2025. Bill was born in Stanford, KY on June 9th, 1936 to George Guilford and Virginia (Hill) Cox. He graduated from Stanford High School in May of 1953 and from the University of Kentucky in May of 1957 with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. While a student at the University of Kentucky, he was a member and president (1956-1957) of Kappa Alpha Order. In 1960 upon completion of an active duty tour in the US Naval Reserve, he returned to Lexington to begin a 40 year career in engineering and construction in the central Kentucky area and the founding of Cox Mechanical Contractors, Inc.
Bill was a member of Christ Church Cathedral and served on the vestry and as Senior Warden. Bill was a member for many years of Bible Study Fellowship, Idle Hour Country Club, the Lexington Club and the Kentucky Civil War Roundtable. He was predeceased by his parents; and his sister Georgia Cox Hocker. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Frances Harting Cox; two sons William Preston Cox, Jr. (Caroline Delafield Cox) and George Coleman Cox; his grandchildren Preston Delafield Cox and Margaret Livingston Cox; and his nephews Jesse Shy Hocker, IV and George Bowling Hocker and their families.
Visitation will be on Monday April 28th at 12:30 p.m. followed by a Celebration of Life at 2 p.m. followed by a private burial for family members.
