John Eugene Kane Obituary

John Eugene Kane, a proud Irishman, devoted Catholic, loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and loyal friend, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025, at the age of 71. Born in 1953 and raised in Westfield, Massachusetts, John was the fourth of six children born to Thomas and Ann Kane.

John’s work ethic was forged early—shining shoes and working the tobacco fields as a boy—and carried through to a long and dedicated career in public service.  He served in key roles including Auditor for the Department of Education, Tax Examiner for the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, City Councilor, City Auditor, School Business Administrator for Ludlow Public Schools, Assistant Superintendent for Business and Personnel for Agawam Public Schools, and Chief Financial Officer for Westfield Public Schools.

Over the years, he was involved in a wide range of professional organizations, including the Westfield Retirement Board, the Board of Assessors, and the Massachusetts Association of School Business Officials—along with too many others to name. His deep sense of civic duty and financial stewardship helped shape his community in meaningful, lasting ways.

John was also co-owner of Erin’s Own Irish Imports and Erin World Travel, bringing a piece of Ireland to the people and places he loved. A founder and proud member of the Sons of Erin in both Westfield and Yarmouth, John found great joy in sharing his Irish heritage, community spirit, and wit wherever he went.

Known for his quick humor, practical jokes, and unwavering generosity, John never missed an opportunity to make someone laugh—or lend a hand. He was a man of principle, deeply rooted in faith and family, who led by quiet example and boundless heart.

John leaves behind his beloved wife of 39 years, Theresa Kane, his rock and source of strength. He was the proud father of Brendan and wife Alaina Kane and Sean and wife Chrissy Kane, and the adored grandfather of Clare, Garrett, Nolan, June, and a grandson eagerly awaited in September.

A loyal brother, John is survived by his brothers Patrick (Lisa) Kane, Thomas (Denise) Kane, and James (Rosemary) Kane, as well as his sisters Mary Anne (James) Cleland and Joanne Kane (Muiris Ferriter). He also held close bonds with his in-laws Kate (Peter) Murphy, Patricia Nicklaw, Mary Noone, Margaret Nicklaw (David Goggin), Maureen Nicklaw and Randy Shaver.

John was a beloved uncle to 31 nieces and nephews, each of whom brought him great pride and joy. His generosity, wisdom, and warmth left a lasting mark on all who knew him.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Heather Rose, John’s aide who became a dear friend, for her compassion, care, and support through his final chapter.
