James Richard Smythe Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Richard Smythe, who departed this life peacefully on April 23, 2025, at the age of 83. Jim was born on January 17, 1942, in Girard, Ohio, to John W. Sr. and Ida Mae “Billie” Smythe.

Jim was a dedicated husband to Jill, his loving wife of 54 years, and a proud father to Jennie and Justin. He was a devoted grandfather (zayde) to three grandchildren, Samuel, Sydney, and Ravi and a loving uncle to many. He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. Sr. and Ida Mae “Billie” Smythe, and his siblings John W. Smythe Jr., Charles A. Smythe, and Gretchen Reese (nee Smythe).

As a veteran of the U.S. Army, Jim served his country with honor and integrity. After his military career, he returned to Youngstown and worked for the State of Ohio. As an avid hobbyist, Jim opened the Hobby House on Belmont with his brother John in the 1970s. After a change in career, he rose to manager at the Tandy Corporation where he worked for over 20 years. However, Jim’s most rewarding job (other than being a father), by all accounts, was during his “retirement” when he worked as a classroom assistant for students with challenges in Trumbull County. In addition, Jim served on the executive board of Ohev Tzedek Temple for over 50 years. Driven by duty and a commitment to service, Jim dedicated his life to his country, his community, and to those in need.

Jim’s kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family and community will never be forgotten and his stories, advice, and warm hugs will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.  His graveside service will be held at Ohev Tzedek Shaarei -Torah Cemetery on April 25, 2025, at 11:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you perform acts of kindness (mitzvot) in Jim’s memory.

Arrangements have been entrusted to The Shriver Allison Courtley Weller King Funeral Home.
