Rev. James F. Pettingale Obituary

BANGOR-Rev. James F. Pettingale, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 28, 2019, at his home in Bangor. James was born on November 30, 1931, in Calais, Maine, the son of the late Wallace and Genevra (Beck) Pettingale. He attended schools in Old Orchard Beach and proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He graduated with the first class of Faith School of Theology in 1962, returning in 1990 to receive his Bachelors in Theological Studies in Groveland, Florida. His greatest joy was one on one street evangelism. James pioneered two ministries, one in Portsmouth, NH, and the other in Bangor. He designed and constructed six churches: Auburn, Gorham, Augusta, Portland, Haverhill, MA, and Olney, Illinois. While serving as a missionary in Africa, he redeveloped ten mission schools. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War. He is survived by his loving wife, Nilda Pettingale of Bangor; children: Dawn Bishop and husband Tony of Ellsworth, Matthew Pettingale and wife Sylvia of Belize, April Kramer of California, Andrew Pettingale of Virginia and James Pettingale Jr and wife Heather of Howland; grandchildren: Emma Bishop, Aliyah Bishop, Rebekah Pettingale, Nathaniel Pettingale, Isaac Pettingale and Zoe Pettingale; sister, Edna Foster of Saco; and a nephew, Steve Foster of Gorham. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Robert Pettingale; and a sister, Shirley Saunders. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to a missions fund of one’s choice, in James’ memory. A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, March 7, 2019, at Messiah Baptist Church, 985 Union Street, Bangor, Maine, with military honors being presented for his service to our country. Light refreshments will follow and all are welcome. A private family committal will take place in the spring at the Riverside Cemetery, Cemetery Road in Newport.
