John L. Ahern, 72, a longtime resident of the Bull Mountains, Died Thursday, Feb 21rst, 2019 of cardiac arrest. He was born Dec 5th, 1946 to Michael (Mickey) & Emma Ahern of Comanche, MT. Where he spent his childhood herding sheep and breaking horses on the family ranch. John graduated from Broadview public school, then enlisted in the Marines to fight in the Vietnam war. After his honorable discharge, he bought a farm out of Hysham, MT. and settled into the cowboy life. There he raised horses, sheep, and cows and every spring he traveled around the country shearing sheep. John met and married a local Hysham girl, Teresa Quest. They later sold the farm and bought land in the Bull Mountains. John lived a simple life on the land he loved. He continued to shear sheep in MT and parts of WY, traveling with his shearing wagon and fellow shearers . He also spent many summers in the Bear tooth mountains hearding sheep, fighting off grizzlies, and taking part in The Last Great Sheep Drive, a documentary film. John was a hard working man who was known for his wry sense of humor, and always willing to help those in need. Underneath his gruff exterior, was a warm-hearted man to those who knew him. He will sorely be missed by his large family and many friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and son Jonah Michael Ahern, who died at the age of three. He is survived by his brother Paul Ahern and family, and his sister Annie Sasse and family, his children Evanstar, Luke, Jacob, Rose(Patrick), David and Jonathan Ahern, his step children Lago Sperline, Mykael Walker, and Leslie Ellis, as well as his 6 grandchildren and many cousins. Memorial service will be March 15th, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Billings, MT with a luncheon to follow. Wier Funeral Home of Roundup, MT is handling the arrangements.
