Nancy Louise Wetzel

Nancy L. Wetzel, 89 EAST LIVERPOOL – Nancy L. Wetzel, of East Liverpool, passed away Friday, March 1, 2019 at the Calcutta Health Care Center following a lengthy illness. She was 89. Born in East Liverpool, March 1, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Florence Fox Howell. A lifetime area resident, for 41 years she was a teacher in the East Liverpool City School District where she taught at both Sixth Street School and Westgate. Along with her late husband, Nancy owned and operated the former Wetzel One Hour Cleaners and Laundromat. She was a member of the St. Clair Avenue Church of Christ. Nancy was valedictorian of the East Liverpool High School Class of 1947. She then attended the University of Mount Union and later earned her Master’s Degree at the University of Dayton in 1979. She was a member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, the Columbiana County Retired Teachers, the Ohio Historical Society, East Liverpool Historical Society and was a life member of the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association. Nancy was also active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Eastern Star and was named to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 1990 and 1994. She also was active at the East Liverpool Hospital Auxiliary where she served as the treasurer at one time. In addition, she was a member of the Mount Union Alumni Council from 1995 to 2001. Her husband, W. Denver Wetzel, preceded her in death on April 21, 2000. The couple married December 15, 1962. A God Daughter survives, Heather Russo Morris and her husband, Brian, of East Liverpool. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother Jimmy Howell. Friends may visit Thursday afternoon and evening at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Evangelist Will Montgomery will conduct a funeral service Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery. Following the service, friends and family will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship. Memorial tributes may take the form of contributions in care of the East Liverpool Historical Society, P.O. Box 476, East Liverpool, Ohio 43920.
