Retired Haverhill Firefighter Arnold F. “Arnie” Hargraves Jr., 76, of Hampstead NH passed away on Thursday evening, February 28, at Exeter Hospital, Exeter, NH after his courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Brockton MA on November 11, 1942, son of the late Arnold F. Sr. and Irene (Levangie) Hargraves. Educated in the Merrimac, MA school system, he was a graduate of Pentucket Regional High School, West Newbury MA, class of 1960 and North Shore Community College’s fire science program before joining the Haverhill Fire Department in 1969, retiring in 2004 as a captain. Arnie was well known for his love of cooking for his family, friends and fellow firefighters. He also had a fondness for classic cars. He cherished time spent at his homes in Bradenton Beach, on Anna Maria Island, Florida, and Mousam Lake in Acton ME. Arnie leaves his wife of 30 years, Donna (Beckford) Hargraves, of Hampstead NH., two daughters, Kimberly Peirce and her husband Jeffrey of Stratham, NH, and Sherry Volpone of Newburyport, along with their Mother Cathy Brown, an aunt, Jane Lohdefink of Richland, WA. Three grandchildren: Derek Lighthall and his wife Samantha, Andrew and Kellianne Volpone, two great grandchildren, Peyton Lighthall, and Stori Volpone; a great-great grandchild, Adeline Isbell as well as several cherished In-laws, nieces and nephews who meant the world to him. The family will be eternally grateful to Denise and Dave Young for their kindness the last months of Arnie’s life, along with the loving support of his friend Robert T. Wilson. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his calling hours on Tuesday, March 5, from 4-7 PM at the H.L. Farmers and Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer Street, Haverhill. His funeral service will be Wednesday morning, March 6, at 10:30 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Firefighters Memorial section of Linwood Cemetery, Haverhill. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Haverhill Firefighters Relief Association c/o Haverhill Fire Department Credit Union, 75 Kenoza Avenue, Haverhill MA 01830.
