Mattie Jo Clemons

Our beloved Centenarian, Mattie Jo Clemons, was born to L.C. and Ruby Lee Merrell in Belton, Texas on February 19,1919.<br>At an early age she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She was a devoted member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church throughout her life. Mattie Jo was lovingly known as the "Mother of the Church." She was a member of the Mt. Zion's Administrative Council Committee, she served as the Sunday School's Secretary, Church's Secretary, and Building Fund Secretary. One little known fact, she was even a member of Mt. Zion's Choir.<br>Mattie Jo was a member of the first graduating class of T.B. Harris High School in 1937 and also graduated with honors, as the Salutatorian. She later attended and graduated in 1939 from Dickerson's School of Cosmetology in Fort Worth, Texas.<br>Mattie Jo married Master Sergeant Precious Preston (“P.P.”) Clemons on June 5, 1948. During their union, they parented two loving children, Laneta “Joyce” and Lewis Preston (“Junior”). Another little known fact, Mattie Jo lived in Germany and travelled to France and England as a military wife.<br>Mattie Jo loved gardening and over her 100 years she planted so many seeds of joy, hope, and love in all of our lives.<br>On Thursday, February 28, 2019, she was called to her eternal home. Mattie Jo was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son. <br>SURVIVORS: a daughter, Laneta "Joyce" Hill of Belton, Texas; her granddaughter & husband, LeVetta & Glover Holloway of San Pedro, California; her granddaughter, Lisa Clemons of Oakland, California; her great-grandchildren, Hope Laneta Jenkins, Lindsay Holloway-Darby & husband Damien Darby, Trevon Holloway; God-grandsons, James Givan and Adeleke Kuyoro and a host of relatives, extended family, and special friends.
