Shelburne "Shirley" Layman
Miss Shelburne Layman (Shirley), 92, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2019, at King’s Grant Health Care Center, Martinsville, VA. Miss Layman was born on March 8, 1926, in Critz, VA, the youngest child of the late Pet Dillard Layman and Ever Koger Layman. In addition to her parents, Miss Layman was preceded in death by her sisters, Geneva Layman Smith, Florence Layman Wood, and Denia Layman; and one brother. Melvy Layman. Miss Layman was employed for 30 years at the DuPont company’s Martinsville location. Upon her retirement in 1981, she enjoyed traveling, working in her garden, and spending time with her family who loved her dearly and were always amazed by her razor-sharp memory of family history. She is survived by her nieces, Brenda Layman Weaver and husband, John of Danville, VA; Ninevah Wood Murray and her husband, Dan, of Greensboro, NC; Sherry Lynn Smith and her husband Chuck Bingham of Ennice, NC; Patricia Layman Townsend and her husband, Phillip of Zionville, NC; and one nephew, Cecil Douglas Smith and his wife, Jenny of Woodbine, MD. She is also survived by grand-nieces, Kelly Weaver, Meredith Murray, Kristi Nickodem (Alex), and a grand-nephew, Josh Townsend and two great-grand-nephews. A memorial service will be held Monday, March 4, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at King’s Grant, led by Dr. Joey McNeill, Miss Layman’s pastor at Fort Trial Baptist Church and Paul Johnson, Chaplain at King’s Grant. A graveside service will be held that same day at 2:00 p.m. at Patrick Memorial Gardens, Stuart, VA, led by Dr. Joey McNeill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given in memory of Miss Layman to either Fort Trial Baptist Church or to Sunnyside Communities, directed to King’s Grant Retirement Center. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff and caregivers at the Health Care Center at King’s Grant for the care and support given to Miss Layman in her 11 years at the Center.
