Danny Eugene Haggard

Dan was born on June 5, 1932 in Colorado Springs, Co to Alva Andrew Haggard and Mabel Irene Todd. He went to meet his Lord on October 19, 2018 holding his wifes hand at Quaker Hill Manor. He graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1950. After graduation he joined the Navy Reserve and served 2 years. During the Korean War he joined the U.S. Marine Corp. and served for 2 years. In 1954 he was joined in marriage to Elizabeth June Reed. He built their house in Black Forest, Colorado. When their first son, David, was 5 years old, God called him to ministry. In order to serve as an educated minister, he attended Yankton College in Yankton, South Dakota. There he earned a BA in religion in 1960. He then entered seminary at Drake Divinity School in Drake University, Des Moines, IA where he earned an MDIV with a major in Old Testament in 1964. While in college and seminary Dan served three student churches (Crofton, NE; Tabor, IA; Prescott, IA). After earning his MDIV he was ordained in his home church, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Colorado Springs, CO. His first full time church was at Oakland, IA. After being there 7 years, he pastored First Christian Church in Chariton, IA, the First Christian Church in Scott City, KS. His last full-time church was First Christian Church, Baxter Springs, KS. During his ministry to this congregation, he lead them through the building of the new church building. He and June led many young people on mission trips, also Dan served as director for several junior high camps and took high school groups down the Missouri River for 11 years. His ministry centered on being a shepherd to all people. He worked with the homeless and hungry in every community in which he served. He took early retirement in 1994 in order to build up the Baxter House which was a place where a homeless person could get something to eat, a place to sleep, and contact a social worker who would help them find jobs and get a new start on life. He worked here for 2 years. After leaving Baxter House he did Intentional Interim Ministry helping congregations that were having some internal problems. He served First Christian Churches in Neosho, MO, Yates Center, KS, Girard KS, Chanute, KS and Columbus, KS. He was past president of the Baxter Springs Lions. Dan was preceded in death by his son, David E. Haggard. His son in law, Charles (Buck) Sharp. His granddaughter, Stacey (Haggard) Brewer and her husband, David Brewer. Also, his 2 sisters and 2 brothers. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, his sister Mary Jones and her husband Orville Jones of Colorado Springs, CO. His 3 children, Anne Sharp, Kristen Shepard and her husband, Jason. All of Baxter Springs, KS and his son, Jon Paul Haggard and his wife, Tralyn of Lufton, MN. He also has 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 27, 2018 at the First Christian Church in Baxter Springs, Kansas. Services will be conducted by Reverends Neil Martin, Cody Graves and Gary Yurk. Family will receive friends Friday, October 26, 2018 from 6:00-7:00 P.M. at Derfelts Baxter Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the NewCovenants Ministries, which was started by his son David in Kenya to help care for widows. Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.
