Donald Gene Harper Obituary
Donald G. Harper, Age 84 passed from this life to spend eternity in Heaven with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on February 16, 2019 at the VA hospital in Des Moines, Iowa surrounded by his family.
Don was born at the farm home of his parents Chelsea and Cleo Harper near Carlock, Illinois. He graduated from Normal Community High School, Normal, Illinois with the class of 1952.
He was united in marriage to Shirley A. Robinson March 11, 1955. To this marriage were born five children, Steven Harper (deceased 2010), Ronald (Dorinda) Harper, Greg Harper, Kelly Harper (deceased 2017) and Sharon (Shawn) Woods.
Don was inducted into the Army in November 1956. He served time in California and Germany before returning home to help with the family farm. They farmed in the Hudson area before moving his family to the Garden Grove, Iowa area in 1967 to continue farming. He was a lifelong farmer and loved everything about it.
Don and Geri Ambrose, the love of his life, were united in marriage on March 9th, 1979, when he added Geri's five children, Jeanne (Hartford) Jackson, Carol Stephens, Lanita (Howard) Town, Loraine (Bobby) McCombs and Steven Ambrose as family members.
Don and Geri farmed in the Garden Grove/Humeston area for many years and moved to
Humeston in 1999. He loved old time county music and camping with family and friends every chance he got. Later they spent several winters in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Farming and family were his major priorities. He was a longtime member of the Humeston First Baptist Church.
Don is survived by his wife Geri, his three living children and families, his step-children and their families including 20 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. His parents, brother Glenn (Lena) Harper, and brother-in-law Jerry Swope, preceded him in death. In addition to his children, he is survived by sisters, Doris (Don) Beverage and Elaine Swope, and brother Larry Harper in Illinois.
A celebration and remembrance of his life will be held at the Baptist Church in Humeston, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 22, 2019.
Burial of his cremains will be in the Humeston Cemetery on June 13, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. Potluck to follow at Lakeside Park in Humeston, Iowa.
Any memorials will be directed to the Alzheimer's Association for research to end this terrible debilitating disease.
