Alice Allen Surratt

Alice Allen Surratt passed away quietly at 11:00 pm on January 18, 2019 at the Hospice of Union County after an eight-year battle with Melanoma which became more aggressive in the last few months of 2018. Alice was the wife of Dr. Jerry L. Surratt, Professor Emeritus of History and Religion at Wingate University. She was born in Toccoa, Georgia on March 18, 1939, the eldest daughter of William Stewart Allen and Louise Buice Allen and grew up in the town of Buford, Georgia. She graduated from North Georgia College and received a Master’s degree in Education from Appalachian State University. For thirty years she taught high school English in Georgia and North Carolina public schools, Anderson College and Wingate College. The capstone of her professional career was fifteen years in the classrooms of Monroe High School. She derived great pleasure from seeing students grow in both general and honors classes. Alice is survived by a sister, Anita Allen Dumas and husband Denny of Forsyth, Georgia, husband of fifty-five years Jerry and three daughters: First, Andrea Menard, and husband Robert of Bozeman, Montana with grandchildren Claire and Allen, Second, Emily Shuford and husband Jamie of Birmingham, Alabama with granddaughters Kate and Lizzie, and Third, Maria Hamilton and husband Richard of Hampstead, North Carolina with grandchildren Quentin and Leah. Alice was extremely proud of her children and grandchildren and the contributions they are making to their communities and our world of the future. A Memorial Celebration of Alice’s life and legacy will be held Monday, January 21, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Wingate Baptist Church, where Alice and Jerry worshiped and served for fifty-one years. The family will greet and visit with friends prior to the service from 1:00 pm until 1:45 pm in the Church Fellowship Hall. The family will travel on Tuesday to the Lick Creek Baptist Church, Davidson County, North Carolina for the interment in the Surratt Family Plot.
