Michael W. Smith, 71, of Akeley, MN, passed away in his sleep late Friday night, March 28th, at his home in Akeley. He was surrounded by a loving family, friends, and pets.
Michael is survived by his beloved son, Michael W. Smith Jr, also of Akeley, his son Caleb and wife Madison, granddaughter Emma, and grandson Elliott, of Wells, Maine. Also of special importance was his sister Carol Kanke of The Villages, Florida, nephew Donald, and niece Mary Faye. Michael was predeceased by his sister Joyce, of Duncanville, TX.
Michael was an avid outdoorsman, and spent his earlier days hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and exploring. He spent much of his adult life in Omaha, Nebraska before moving to Minnesota to enjoy a quiet rural life away from the city. A skilled auto mechanic, Michael often tinkered on cars, trucks, motorcycles, and home projects. Known for his wit, and unique brand of humor, he was a self-proclaimed ornery bastard, even into his 70s.
He is fondly remembered for his sayings, such as “Keep the shiny side up.” He will be missed dearly.
