Barbara Irene Laho Obituary

Barbara Irene Laho, full of love and devotion to her family, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2025, in Livonia, Michigan, at the age of 77. Born on October 17, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Myrl and Emma Dout, Barbara grew up with a foundation of love that she would continue to build upon throughout her life.

Barbara was a proud member of the Girl Scouts, a graduate of Lutheran High School West, class of 1965, and went on to attend Michigan Lutheran College and Concordia University where she earned an associate’s degree. Her passion for learning was evident in all her endeavors. She spent many years working at Hudson's Department Store, where she was a cherished colleague across various departments, touching the lives of many with her dedication and bright spirit.

In her personal life, Barbara was the loving wife of Jerry Laho, and together they built a family that included their daughters, Greta Laho (Arthur Nettle) and Rachel Laho-Slovinac (Adam Slovinac), and their adored granddaughter, Payton Slovinac. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Richard Dout (Carol), but her legacy continues through her many nieces, great nephews, and cousins, who will forever remember her.

Barbara's interests reflected her joyful and nurturing character.  In the early years of their marriage, you would find Barbara playing pinochle and listening to the Motown hits with their many friends. She had an unwavering love for moose, particularly her favorite stuffed animal, Mr. Moose, who was not just a toy but a cherished member of the family. She created a whimsical world for Mr. Moose and his stuffed companions, much to the delight of those around her. Her love for cooking was another way she expressed her care for others, especially when baking with her granddaughter Payton. Her kitchen was a place of warmth, laughter, and delicious creations.

A lifelong fan of the Detroit Red Wings (especially Micky Redmond!) and all Detroit sports teams, Barbara's enthusiasm for Michigan football and hockey was infectious. She cherished the times spent watching Michigan hockey games with Payton, sharing her love for the sport and her team. Barbara also found solace in reading, with a particular fondness for cookbooks and recipe magazines, which fueled her culinary adventures.

Barbara's favorite television channels were the Food Network and Hallmark (she loved the Christmas movies) and she found joy in watching her most loved shows; Good Morning America, Kelly & Mark, Jeopardy, local Channel 7 news and weatherman, Dave Rexroth and ABC World News Tonight with her number one National news anchor David Muir! She never missed "Monk" and "Murder She Wrote" with her favorite coffee or London Fog Latte, solving the mysteries with Adrian Monk and Jessica Fletcher.  Her tastes in entertainment reflected her own personality - funny, thoughtful, and full of heart.

The family cottage at Mullett Lake held a special place in Barbara's heart. Having spent her childhood summers there, it remained a cherished sanctuary for her and her family. She loved swimming in Mullett Lake and the peace it brought to her soul. The cottage continues to be a treasured place for her family, a testament to the beautiful memories she helped create.

Barbara's earlier years were also marked by a love for gardening, and she enjoyed shopping, particularly grocery shopping, where she found inspiration for her next yummy masterpiece.  Her faith was a cornerstone of her existence, guiding her through life's challenges and triumphs with grace and gratitude.

Those who knew Barbara would describe her as humorous, kind, and faith filled. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone around her feel cherished and valued. Her presence was a source of comfort and joy to her family and friends, and her absence will be deeply felt by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Barbara Irene Laho leaves behind a legacy of kindness and an unwavering commitment to her family and friends. As we say goodbye to this extraordinary woman, we take solace in knowing that her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. Barbara's memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of her loved ones forever.
