David E. Mates Obituary

David Edward Mates, age 79, passed away peacefully at home on

Thursday, March 20, 2025, just days after the heartbreaking loss of his

beloved wife of 57 years, Judy.

David was born on July 26, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, to Edward and

Virginia (Zalewski) Mates. On November 25, 1967, he married the love of

his life, Judy, beginning a marriage filled with love, laughter, and devotion.

Together, they shared 57 beautiful years — a partnership filled with

unwavering support, joy, and mutual admiration. Dave often joked that he

was “spoiled rotten” by Judy, and those who knew them saw firsthand the

deep bond they shared.

A proud Captain in the United States Marine Corps, Dave carried his sense

of duty, discipline, and pride throughout his life. Professionally, he served

as a Certified Public Accountant for The Miami Corporation for 36 years,

faithfully committing to a grueling four-hour daily commute — a testament

to his dedication and strong work ethic.

Upon retirement, Dave and Judy enjoyed 15 well-deserved years of

adventure and togetherness, traveling the world and embracing life’s

simple pleasures. Dave was also deeply dedicated to the Western English

Setter Club and the English Setter Association of America, proudly serving

and supporting the organization for nearly 50 years. His passion for the

breed and the camaraderie of the club brought him great joy and lifelong

friendships.

Although he was the proud father of daughters, Suzanne Day & Heather

Harley, he was truly delighted to be “Papa” to three grandsons, Evan Day,

Nick Day and James Harley, who brought endless pride and happiness to

his life. He cherished cheering on Evan and Nick on at football games,

loudly analyzing plays from the sidelines, and celebrating not just their

victories, but also the friendships and memories they created.

Dave is survived by his loving siblings: Tom Mates (Cindy), Terese

Jackowski (Ralph), and Valerie Bava (Mike), as well as many extended

family members and friends who will miss his humor, strength, and warm

spirit.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 30, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00

p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home, 591 Ridgeview Drive, McHenry, IL.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 31, 2025, at 11:00

a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1401 N. Richmond Road, McHenry, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in David’s honor to

the Wounded Warrior Project, a cause close to his heart.
