Walter Eugene "Wally" Metcalf, age 91, of Highland, Indiana, peacefully passed away at his home on Thursday, March 20th, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in East Chicago, Indiana, on October 13th, 1933, to Eugene and Veronica Metcalf, Wally was a proud graduate of Roosevelt High School's class of 1952. Dedicated to education and lifelong learning, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Indiana University Bloomington and furthered his academic journey with a Master's degree from Purdue University Calumet.
Wally devoted his life to teaching, spending many years inspiring students in Biology for the School City of East Chicago. His passion for science extended to teaching Genetics, Immunology, and Anatomy and Physiology at St. Joseph College, where he was known for his engaging classes and profound impact on students.
Wally married the love of his life, Betty Ann Metcalf, and shared a devoted marriage of 62 years filled with love, support, and companionship until her passing. Together, they enjoyed traveling, cooking large meals, and making valuable memories at their home with family. Wally shared special bonds with his children, including memorable fishing trips with his son Eugene and treasured afternoons watching Chicago Cubs games with his daughter, Kathy—though he was famously known to get a bit aggravated by the bullpen during the late innings.
Quiet by nature, Wally was a thoughtful observer of life who, when he spoke, shared insights that left lasting impressions.
A devoted family man, Wally cherished his time with loved ones. He is survived by his children, Eugene (Sherri) Metcalf and Kathy (Andy) Pozywio; grandchildren Shaun (Jessie) Mendoza-Pozywio, Alexis Beth Metcalf, and Victoria Jean Metcalf; sister Lorraine Metcalf; and niece Deanna (John) Gordinier. His family also fondly includes his grand-dog Samson Metcalf, great-granddogs Max and Lucy, and great-grandcats Princess Caroline and Valentina, all of whom brought him much happiness.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Ann Metcalf; parents Eugene and Veronica; brother Larry; sister Rose; and grandparents Frank and Victoria Pilch.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Traditions Hospice Team, especially Miriam and Sandra (nurses), Heather and Anna (aides), Doris, and all the additional team members who provided compassionate care and comfort during Wally’s final days.
