Lifelong newspaperman Charles B. Camp, died peacefully on March 20, 2025 from heart failure complications. He was 83.

Mr. Camp was born in Ridgefield, the son of Alice B. and George M. Camp. He grew up on Olmstead Lane, graduated from Ridgefield High School in the Class of 1960, and from Syracuse University, summa cum laude, in 1964. 

He began his journalism career as a youngster, publishing a neighborhood newspaper. During college, he worked fulltime as a reporter for the Syracuse (NY) Post-Standard, and after a brief stint at the Buffalo (NY) Courier-Express, joined The Wall Street Journal in 1965, where he would remain for 25 years.   

He started in Cleveland, then covered the automobile industry for 14 years in Detroit, half of them as bureau chief. He later served as Houston bureau chief. He served nine years in The Journal’s New York headquarters in a number of editing and management positions, including Acting National News Editor and Senior Editor.  

After retiring from The Journal in 1990, he worked as a consultant for the paper for two years, then returned to reporting – his first love in journalism – at the Dallas Morning News. He was later named Business Editor there. In 2002, he moved to the Lexington (KY) Herald-Leader, where he worked as a reporter and editor. During his career, Mr. Camp particularly enjoyed mentoring young reporters, who he considered the heart of any news organization.   

He retired from the newspaper business in 2005, and in 2014 settled with his wife June in Yarmouth Port, MA. Known to friends as Chuck, Mr. Camp was a vintage automobile and auto racing enthusiast, and also an avid road bicycle rider. In recent years he wrote for a small auto racing history magazine.

Mr. Camp was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, June A. (Robinson) Camp, and a brother, Peter M.(Nancy) Camp.

He is survived by three children, Donna A. (John) Cantarella of Rehoboth, MA; William F. (Marjeanne) Camp of Beverly Hills, MI; Deborah L. (W. Bradley) McCaulley of Roswell, GA, and by six grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, George B. (Dale) Camp Jr. of Royal Oak, MI, and a sister, Mary E. (William) Scott of Brewster, MA.  

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, April 2, 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Kane Funeral Home; 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield. A graveside service and interment will take place on Thursday, April 3, 2025 at 11:00 AM in Saint Mary's Cemetery; 110 North Street, Ridgefield.
