Max Wood Jr., 61, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Thursday, March 20, 2025, at his home in Samson, AL. He grew up and raised his family in Wewahitchka, FL and it was always home to him. He was born September 4, 1963, in Port St Joe, FL.
Max spent four years in the United States Army defending his country as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division Company B 1/505th infantry battalion where he fought alongside his brothers-in-arms in the Grenada Invasion called Operation Urgent Fury-1983. After leaving the Army, Max spent thirty plus years as a boilermaker, starting off as an apprentice and became a Master Craftsman. He also became a skilled horseshoe farrier and blacksmith. Max was a man that never backed down and was always up for the challenge. He was an animal lover, if a stray animal ever came around they would definitely hit the jackpot because Max was going to make sure they got what they needed to survive and/or they had found a home.
Max was a hard worker and put his all into a job. He took all the skills he learned in life and held on to them and used them in every aspect of everyday life. Throughout his life he was a hunter, a fisherman, a farmer, a cattleman, a horseman, a dog trainer, a snake charmer, you name it, Max had probably done it, and that’s no joke. Max has done more things in his short life than most men dream of and he had no regrets. Out of all this, the most important thing in Max’s life was his family. His mission was to protect them at all cost and there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that knew him, that he would do just that, and if you ever found yourself as a friend of Max Wood’s, well then, you had a friend for life.
Max was preceded in death by his father, Max Wood Sr., mother, Minnie L. Price and stepfather, Charles Price; step-brother Kenneth Price; son-in-law Joseph Kyle Rich; and Jerry and Leonia Holmes.
Those left to cherish Max’s memory include his wife of 10 years, Patty Wood; daughters, Courtney Russ (J.J.) and Danielle Rich Marshall (Jeffrey); step-sons, Evan Robbins (Caitlyn) and Jace Robbins (Madison); eleven grandchildren, Payton, Tyler, Tucker, Landen, Freya, Allie, Jenson, Savanna, Isla, Mary Alan and Asher Max; brother, Gary Holmes (Angie); sisters, Abbie Jones and Debbie Camp; step-sister, Faye Hysmith (Billy); step-brother, Tony Price (Susan); aunt Idella Williams (Julian), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a whole host of friends who will miss him greatly.
A funeral service will be held 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at Westside Baptist Church with Pastor Jeffrey Marshall (officiating), along with Dallas Presley, and Derrick Gerber. The family will receive friends beginning 12:00 noon until service time. Interment will follow in Buckhorn Cemetery. Pallbearers are David Gaskin, Scotty Brown, Gary Holmes, Rusty Wood, Tony Price, and Allen Stokes.
