Philip Paul Dodero Obituary

Philip Paul Dodero, 89, of New Paltz, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2025 at his home.

Philip Paul Dodero was a man of strength, pride, and dedication—traits that defined every part of his life. As a Navy man, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a great-grandfather, he lived a life of service, love, and honor.

Born in the Bronx to Paul and Rosina Portella Dodero, Phil was a proud graduate of the Machine and Metal Trade School in 1953. Shortly after, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving with distinction from February 16, 1955, until December 7, 1961. Phil was incredibly proud of his time in the Navy, particularly his service aboard the USS Saratoga. He spoke fondly of those days, especially the memories captured in his official Navy photo, which he loved showing off to anyone who would listen. To him, his uniform and the honor it represented were a source of immense pride. His service earned him the National Defense Medal and a Good Conduct Medal First Award, affirming the discipline and dedication he carried throughout his life.

Phil’s career as a salesman was varied, but perhaps his most memorable chapter was as a route salesman for Stella D'oro Cookies—a job that gave him a special place in the hearts of many. Though he retired after an injury, his work ethic and humor left lasting impressions wherever he went.

At the heart of Phil’s life was his family. He shared 65 wonderful years with his beloved wife, Carole A. Dodero, and together they built a loving home for their two daughters, Dianne and Leigh Ann. He was also a proud father-in-law, grandfather to six wonderful grandchildren, and a great-grandfather to four beautiful great-grandchildren. Phil’s love for his family was limitless, and his pride in them was evident to all who knew him.

Phil is remembered as a man who always carried himself with pride, whether in his Navy uniform or in his role as a loving family man. His warmth, wisdom, and humor will continue to live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Phil is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carole A. Dodero of New Paltz, two daughters, Dianne Dodero and her husband, Matt Pillius of Newburgh, NY and Leigh Ann (Marc)Shingelo of Ponder, TX, six grandchildren, Alexa Rae, Kyle, Matthew, Steven, Julianne and Carlie, four great grandchildren, Kellyn, Colby, Chistian and Emmie.

In addition to his parents, Phil was predeceased by his sister, Carmella “Nina” Honeyman
