Hersh S. Rozen, 87, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2025 at home with his wife and family by his side after a valiant fight with cancer. Hersh was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Sylvia (Stewart) Rozen, his brother Hillard Rozen, and his sister Rosyln Rosenbaum. Hersh is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Beverly (Zalbowitz) Rozen. They were both born in Binghamton, NY where they lived their entire lives and raised their family. They have three sons: Cory and Janet (Hudson) Rozen, Steven and Michele (Weiss) Rozen, Eric and Tarryn (Larson) Rozen; six grandchildren: Mitchell and Daniella (Sutnick) Rozen, Justin Rozen and Leianna Burke, Scott Rozen, Maxwell Rozen, Dara Rozen and Seth Rozen; along with Joao Panhalber, an exchange student from Brazil (1978); also many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Hersh graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelors of Arts Degree. He earned Master’s Degrees in Education from Elmira College, and Counseling from Colgate University. Hersh began his 37-year career in education starting as a biology teacher at Binghamton North High School. He also served many students as a guidance counselor at both North High School and the combined Binghamton High School; and faculty advisor to the Senior Class and Honor Society. He was admired and respected by his administrators, colleagues, students and their parents. Wherever he went, he was approached by former students and thanked for his guidance and support. Hersh was a life-long member of The Jewish Community Center and Temple Israel serving as President and Trustee for many years. Also a member of the Binghamton Rotary Club where he was honored as Man of the Year.
Hersh and Beverly would travel in their motor home with the family, often taking each grandchild on a special trip of their own. Later they enjoyed special places together – locally and all over the world. Walks on the beach together were the best. He found pleasure in tending to his flower gardens surrounding their home. As an avid knitter, he sold his “one of a kind” creations at local craft fairs that were worn by many. Hersh liked dancing and going on day trips with Beverly in his convertible. His smile, optimism, encouragement and goodwill will be remembered by all.
Winters were spent in the Bahamas where their greatest joy was visits from their children and grandchildren. This past December, the entire family gathered together for a celebration of life. The Rozen Family thanks everyone for the love and support shown to them during Hersh’s illness.
